Upcasting
Some spells gain damage, additional targets, or other benefits when cast with a higher-level slot.
The benefit depends on the spell. One may gain damage dice while another lets you choose more targets.
A higher slot does not improve every spell. Read the selected level’s description before spending a resource you may need elsewhere.
