Ritual spells
Ritual spells do not spend spell slots when cast outside combat and turn-based mode.
Casting a useful ritual before combat can conserve slots. Look for the Ritual property on the spell.
Do not assume it remains free in combat. Check the slot and action costs while in combat or turn-based mode.
